nadine coyleConservation volunteers, including the Girl’s Aloud star Nadine Coyle, have broken the world record for the largest number of trees planted in one hour.

Over 100 people took part in the event in Londonderry, planting 26,422 trees at Gransha Woods. They beat the previous record by more than 8,000.

It was part of the BBC Breathing Places ‘Tree O’Clock’ event which aimed to plant thousands of trees across the UK. Over 3,000 trees were also planted at a Tree O’Clock event at Stormont.

The Environment Minister Edwin Poots joined GAA players and a host of local sports stars to lend a hand in the planting of thousands of young oak and ask trees on the estate.

Similar tree planting events also took place in Craigavon, Ballymena and County Tyrone on Saturday.

Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle is swapping her high heels for wellies as she attempts to break a tree planting world record in Londonderry.

She will be joined by Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland (CVNI), firemen, athletes and as they try to break the Guinness World Record for the most trees planted on one site, in one hour.

The event will take place on Saturday 5 December at 1100 GMT at Gransha Park as part of National Tree Week and the BBC’s Breathing Places Tree O’Clock Campaign.

Nadine Coyle will be mucking in and kicking off the proceedings at the park – the team have a target of 23,000 trees being planted by 100 people in one hour.

The total needs to be more than 18,124, the current record, held by a team of school children, the Forestry Commission Scotland, and BP staff in Aberdeenshire.

Derry tree planters will compete against English teams in Essex and Hertfordshire to try to beat the world record.

There are hundreds of events taking place across the country, and you can organise your own or get involved by planting at home
